Introduction:
It is a 19th century royal cenotaph built in commemoration
of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, the 33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur.
The son of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, Maharaja Sardar Singh,
in the memory of his father, built the Jaswant Thada. The
Jaswant Thanda, located half way up the interminably long
road that climbs onwards to the fort, is the traditional cremation
ground of the rulers of Jodhpur. Taking pride of place amongst
the onrnamental gardens and chattris is the fabulous white
marble memorial to Jaswant Singh II, built in 1899. The Jaswant
Thada memorial lies near the Merengarh fort. It is the cremation
ground of former rulers with distinctive memorials in white
marble which commemorate Jaswant Singh II and successive rulers
of Marwar. Jaswant Thada is a beautifully stone carved cenotaph.
Wonderful curvatures, along with several decorative items
are used for the decoration of domes. This great historic
architecture appears heavenly at night.
Jaswant Thada is a classic example of the famed Rajputana
style of architecture. The main cenotaph is really impressive
with its ornamented sculptures, friezes, domes and pillars.
You will be also be able to marvel at the separate section
of cenotaphs dedicated to the braves queens and concubines
who committed sati (self immolation) on the pyre of Jaswant
Singh. Figures of dancing girls adorn the pillars of this
section and speak a lot about the artistic genius of the sculptors
who worked on it. |
